Japanese Woodblock Prints at Arundells: Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806) and Yoshida Hiroshi (1876–1950)

In this lecture, Monika Hinkel will introduce the iconic Japanese printmakers Kitagawa Utamaro and Yoshida Hiroshi whose prints were collected by Sir Edward Heath. A selection of their prints is on view in Arundells’ Library or Japanese Room. Monika will provide insights into the evolution of Japanese Printmaking and into the wonderful works by Utamaro and Hiroshi. The talk will also give an overview of the first special exhibition on the Yoshida family of printmakers Yoshida 吉田: Three Generations of Japanese Printmaking which is on show at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London from 19 June to 3 November 2024.

Monika Hinkel is a Lecturer in the Arts of Japan at SOAS, University of London. She received her PhD from Bonn University and has written widely on aspects of Japanese art. Monika has worked as a Curator for Japanese art at the Museum of East Asian Art, Cologne and lived in Japan for many years. Her special research interest is Japanese Woodblock Prints.

Where: The Studio, Arundells, Cathedral Close, Salisbury.

There is no parking at Arundells, we recommend using city centre car parks.
